Ondeh ondeh (also spelled onde onde) is a popular sweet treat in Malaysia. This traditional ondeh ondeh recipe is made from glutinous rice flour and is very easy to prepare. Read on to know how to recreate this simple but delicious ondeh ondeh recipe at home.

Ingredients

  • 250g of glutinous rice flour
  • 200ml of pandan juice
  • 100g of grated coconut
  • Salt to taste
  • 150g of palm sugar, finely chopped

Ondeh Ondeh Recipe

Directions

  • First, boil some water in a pot.
  • Meanwhile, mix the glutinous rice flour with pandan juice in a large bowl. Knead lightly until well combined. Then, pinch a small piece of the dough (approximately 40g) and drop it into boiling water.
  • Once the dough rises to the surface, remove it using a slotted spoon and shake off the excess water. Mix the boiled dough into the main dough and knead well. This will form a smooth dough. Cover and set aside.
  • Next, mix the grated coconut with salt.
  • Bring a pot of water to boil for the second time.
  • Pinch a small piece of dough and flatten lightly with your fingers. Fill the centre with palm sugar. Pinch the edges and roll the dough in your palms to form a smooth ball.
  • Repeat step 6 until all the ingredients are used up.
  • Drop the ondeh ondeh balls into the pot of boiling water. Once they float, remove them using a slotted spoon and shake off the excess water. Coat them with the grated coconut and serve!

Ondeh Ondeh Tips

For the best ondeh ondeh, be sure to use freshly grated coconut. However, if unavailable, you can opt for desiccated coconut instead. Simply mix the desiccated coconut with salt and steam in a steamer for 30 minutes.
