If you're looking for something delicious to have with your coffee, look no further! Our vanilla swiss roll recipe is perfect for you. A plain chiffon cake filled with whipped cream and jam, this light dessert sometimes comes with fruit for a better flavour. Swiss rolls come in many flavours, colours and designs. For example, chocolate swiss rolls, tiramisu swiss rolls and lemon swiss rolls. This delicious dessert is undoubtedly in a class of its own.
Preheat the oven to 180℃. Grease a 10x15 inch baking pan and add parchment paper. Grease the parchment paper and set it aside.
Whisk the egg yolks and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Add the milk, oil and vanilla extract. Stir well.
Mix flour and baking powder in another bowl and then sift it into the yolk mixture. Stir well.
Beat the egg whites in a stand mixer. Add the cream of tartar and continue beating until soft peaks form. Increase the mixer speed and gradually add the sugar. Continue beating until stiff peaks form.
Fold the beaten egg whites into the egg yolk batter with a rubber spatula.
Transfer the batter to the baking pan. Bake for 12 minutes and set aside on a wire rack to cool.
To remove the parchment paper from the cake, dust the top of your cake with powdered sugar and place a new parchment paper and baking tray over it. Flip the cake over. Remove the wire rack and peel off the parchment backing off the cake. Repeat the steps to flip the cake so that it is facing the right side up again.
Spread the strawberry jam across the surface of the cake. Spread the whipped cream on top of the jam. Leave about half an inch on the edges of the cake.
Lift the parchment paper from the cake, and roll the cake away from your body with the parchment paper.
Press the cake gently to reinforce its shape. Unwrap the cake, and sprinkle it with powdered sugar.
Chill for an hour before serving.
Swiss Roll Baking Tips
Our swiss roll recipe is simple and easy to follow. However, if you are new to baking, you might need some help. Here are three baking tips to perfect our swiss roll recipe.
Use room temperature eggs to add more volume to your whipped egg whites.
If your cake cracks when you are rolling, don't panic. Hold the cake firmly as you roll, and the moisture in the cake will seal the cracks together once it is wrapped with the parchment paper.
You can customise our recipe by adding your favourite fruit jams (blueberry, raspberry, etc.)
