Ingredients

Pork:

  • 150g of minced pork
  • ½ tbsp of light soy sauce
  • 1 tsp of sesame oil
  • 1 tsp of Shaoxing wine
  • ¼ tsp of white pepper

Tau kwa:

  • 200g of tau kwa, approximately 1 piece
  • ¼ tsp of salt
  • 2 tbsp of oil
  • 1 clove of garlic, crushed
  • 125ml of water
  • ½ tbsp of light soy sauce
  • ½ tbsp of dark soy sauce
  • 1 tsp of cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp of water
  • 1 stalk of spring onion, chopped

Tau Kwa Recipe

Directions

  • Combine minced pork, light soy sauce, sesame oil, Shaoxing wine, and white pepper in a bowl. Set aside to marinate for 10 minutes.
  • Pat dry the tau kwa with paper towels.
  • With a knife, slice it into ½-inch pieces.
  • Sprinkle salt over the tau kwa, rub it gently, and then set it aside to marinate for 10 minutes.
  • In a pan over medium heat, add oil.
  • Add the tau kwa and pan fry until golden-brown on both sides. Remove and set aside.
  • Add the garlic and sauté until fragrant.
  • Turn the heat up to medium-high and add the marinated minced pork. Cook until browned.
  • Transfer the tau kwa back into the pan, then add water, light soy sauce, and dark soy sauce.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil before turning the heat down to low and simmer for 5 minutes. Flip the tau kwa to ensure even cooking and colour on all sides.
  • In another bowl, combine cornstarch and water to form a slurry.
  • Pour the cornstarch slurry into the pan and mix. Cook until the sauce reduces and thickens.
  • Remove from heat and transfer to a platter. Garnish with chopped spring onions and serve immediately.

Vegetarian-friendly

This tau kwa recipe can be easily turned into a vegetarian-friendly dish with just one step. Simply remove the minced pork from the equation, and you’re good to go! It’ll still be equally as delicious as the original.
