The basil pork, better known as Pad Kra Pao, is a classic Thai meal and a staple in their cuisine. If you’re off visiting the vibrant streets of Thailand, you’ll find this dish almost everywhere. In hawker centres, markets, food courts, you’re guaranteed to stumble upon too many vendors selling their own version of the basil pork. It’s also quick and easy to recreate at the comfort of your home—just follow our version of the basil pork recipe.

Ingredients

  • 10 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 shallots, diced
  • 6 Thai Bird’s Eye Chilli, chopped
  • 1 large red chilli
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp sweet soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp light soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp fish sauce
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 500g minced pork
  • 200g long beans, chopped
  • 1 bunch holy basil leaves

  • 1 bowl
  • 1 wok, or frying pan

Basil Pork Recipe

Directions

  • In a blender, add in garlic, shallots, Thai Bird’s Eye Chilli, red chilli, salt, and blend until it becomes a rough paste. Set aside.
  • In a bowl, add the sweet and light soy sauce, fish sauce, 2 tablespoons of water, sugar and mix. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely.
  • In a wok, add oil over medium-high heat.
  • Add in the paste and fry until it is fragrant.
  • Throw in the minced pork and chopped long beans.
  • Add the sauce mixture and stir, bringing it to a light boil.
  • Add in the holy basil leaves and let it cook.
  • Ladle the basil pork into a bowl and immediately serve.

Protein alternatives

The basil pork recipe can be altered with alternative protein options. You can use minced chicken or beef, and the end product would be equally as delicious. For our fellow vegetarians, you can also opt to swap the protein for tofu!
